We understand that it’s a lot to take in. After all, it’s the biggest update we’ve made since we launched in 2012!

Not only is the look and feel totally different, but also the way that OLX works. It’s now even safer, easier, faster and more fun to buy and sell. To help you wrap your head around everything, here are some Frequently Asked Questions.

Besides the colours, what else has changed on OLX?
With the new OLX, we’re excited to bring you a world-class platform that makes it easier, safer and faster to seal deals with real people. For that to be possible we changed the following:

  1. Posting an ad is even easier and faster than before.
  2. Everyone has profiles, including buyers.
  3. You can follow your favourite sellers and get notified when they have something new to sell.
  4. You can now see if you and a buyer or seller have mutual friends.
  5. Now you can share a location to meet in chat without giving away personal information.
  6. You now have more ways to search for deals.
  7. Not only can you report ads, but you can report suspicious or inappropriate profiles.
  8. Our new site is even sleeker and more responsive.

Why did the app and site change?
Thanks to the feedback we’ve received from all our users, we’ve decided to go out with the old and in with the new! We’re constantly trying to improve our service. With the new OLX, we’re now offering a world-class platform for you to buy and sell goods from real people near you in an even safer, faster and easier way than before.

Is there a way to use less data on OLX?
We understand that data doesn’t come cheap. We’re constantly looking for ways to help out OLXers with that. Our aim is to make sure there is only high-quality content on our platform, so that everyone feels safer and can enjoy making deals on OLX. We hope you stay in touch and see how we continue to improve OLX. In the meantime, perhaps speak to your internet service provider for tips on how to save data.


How can I edit or delete my ad?
You can edit or delete an ad in 5 easy steps:

  1. 1. From the home screen, tap or click on the menu icon in the top left corner.
  2. Tap or click on listed to see all your ads.
  3. Tap or click on the ad you want to edit or delete
  4. Tap or click on the edit button on the bottom right corner.
  5. Finally, choose edit or delete.

I can’t see how many views my ad has. How do I know people are viewing my ads?
With our recent upgrade, we’ve removed views and phone taps, and added something even better! Buyers are now able to follow you and favourite your ads. That way, your regular buyers will be the first to know when you have something new to sell. And, if you get enough favourites, your ad will be marked as ‘HOT’, which means it will get more attention!

Where can I find my ads?
If this is your first time logging onto the new OLX, your ads may be missing as they’re linked to your phone number, and you may have logged in with Facebook. We recommend logging out and logging back in with your number to see your ads. You can find your ads under your profile, labelled as ‘Listed’.

How do you see other ads of a seller?
You can see the other ads of a seller on their profile under ‘Listed.’

How long can the title and description be?
Buyers like ads that are short and straight to the point – no need for long descriptions when you’re trying to sell fast! So, titles are a maximum of 30 characters, and descriptions can be no more than 500 characters.

Can I post in a bigger area than my current location?
It’s possible to post in a bigger area by simply changing your location when you post the ad. The new OLX makes it so that the first buyers to see the ad are the ones closest to the location the ad has been posted in. Who wants to trek far to make a transaction anyway?

How do I hide my number?
All you have to do is not include your phone number when you post an ad. With the New OLX, people can get in touch with you via chat which means you can keep your private information private.

How to share my ads on social media?
To share your ad, scroll down to the bottom of your ad. Below the map. You’ll see all the options to share your ad – Facebook post, Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp and an option to share elsewhere. So you can let everybody know about your great deal.

How many photos can I upload for my ad?
A picture is worth a thousand words, so to make the most impact you must upload at least 1 photo. You can upload a maximum of 8 photos per ad.

Can I post my ad to different cities?
We want everyone to see high-quality content on our platform so we don’t allow duplicates. How about getting people from different cities to follow your profile? That way, they will be notified when you post something new. And because you’ll only need one post to do that, it will be less of a hassle for you.

How can I refresh my ads?
Refreshing ads is not available at the moment, but that’s not a problem. Ads are now organised based on location, so buyers near you will still be the first to know about your ad.

What happened to my history? I only see a few of my ads now?
To keep content fresh and relevant for buyers, we have moved only the ads that were posted over the last 30 days. You can post a new ad for the ones that are really important to you. We’ve made it super fast and easy.


Why should I have a profile to buy on OLX?
Having a profile makes OLX safer for everyone. It means you can see who you’re dealing with. And you never know, you might have mutual friends in common!

Do I have to login with Facebook every time?
You can log in using your number or Facebook. With that said, we do recommend linking your number to Facebook, so you don’t miss out on all the fun.

How do I add a picture to my profile and can I change it later?
With the new OLX, you can personalise your profile as much as you want and as often as you want (as long as it sticks with our policy, of course).

To upload a new profile picture:

  1. Tap or click on the edit button on your profile.
  2. Tap or click on change picture.

How long can my bio or “About Me’ section be?
Keep your bio short and sweet. It should be a maximum 200 characters.

How long can my name be?
It should be no longer than 100 characters.

How often can I edit my profile?
You can edit your bio or About Me section as often as you like.


How do I share location in chat?
We’ve made it extremely easy to share a location in chat. All you have to do is:

  1. Tap or click on the map icon in chat.
  2. Drag the pin to your preferred location to share.

 So you can agree on a place to meet and seal the deal without giving away your personal information. The new OLX is even safer than before!

How do I see if someone has read my message?
The new OLX has an even better chat because you can see when a person is online – it will say online underneath the person’s name in chat. And you can see when someone has read your chat thanks to the blue ticks just below your next message.


How do I search in my current or another location?
The new OLX app automatically picks up your current location as long as you have enabled location in your phone’s settings. Otherwise, you can simply move the pin on the map to your current location. You can also drop a pin on another location to search there.

Can I get updates for new ads that I’m searching for?
We no longer have saved searches, but we have something even better. You can follow your favourite sellers and get notified as soon as they have something amazing for sale.

How do I search the whole country?
Because there are thousands of ads posted on OLX across the country, it’s easier if you first put in what you’re searching for. The results are organised by the nearest to you first. The more you scroll down the results, the further the options get from you. So it starts at anything matching your search within 3km and expands to 600km.

Why can’t I see any ads in my area?
There’s an easy fix to that. Simply change the location you’re searching in.

How do you see if the ad is old?
Good news, if the item is no longer available, the seller should mark it as sold. We recommend getting in touch with the seller to check if it’s still available.

Why can’t I see my favourite ads from the previous version of OLX?
With our upgrade, we started fresh with only the latest ads. So now there’s more to favourite, and now you can even sellers.

Why is it set to the wrong location on my app?
No worries, it may happen from time to time due to a default setting on your phone. All you need to do is click on the filters option on top of the home screen and then move the pin on the map to your current location.


How do I report fraud?
With our new upgrade, we’ve made it even easier to not only report a dodgy ad but a scammer as well.

To report a profile, all you have to do is:

  1. Tap or click on the report icon (flag) on their profile.
  2. Choose the reason why you’re reporting them.
  3. Give a description.

Additionally, you can contact us on our fraud hotline 021 406 3900 between 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.

Does OLX hold any guarantee for damaged goods purchased on the platform?
Unfortunately, we’re only a platform that helps buyers and sellers meet to make great deals. We don’t offer any guarantee on products that are sold, but we can help in cases where a seller misled a buyer about the condition of the goods. That is essentially fraud, so we can provide the seller’s details once the buyer opens a case at his or her nearest police station who sends us a subpoena.

How do I buy top ads?
Tops Ads aren’t available on the new upgrade but will be soon. Watch this space, we definitely have something in the pipeline.
